Meet Laurence

My creative process is driven by the play of color—the way colors interact on the canvas and blend to create unique, captivating effects. I begin without a fixed plan, allowing the movement and merging of pigments to guide the evolution of each piece. This intuitive method lets the color relationships reveal themselves, forming the foundation for the work’s energy and emotional resonance.

Living in London, I frequently visited the Tate Gallery, where the paintings deeply influenced me. The colors in those works spoke to me profoundly, sparking a desire to explore my own artistic voice through color. Artists like Mark Rothko, Joseph Wright, and J.M.W. Turner had a particularly strong impact on my understanding of color’s physicality and power. Their works embody a vivid tension between light, shadow, and pigment that I strive to echo in my own paintings.

As an abstract expressionist, I do not start with specific subjects or images. Instead, my focus is on how color can evoke feeling and draw the viewer into an immersive experience. When a painting reaches a point where the color harmonies and contrasts emotionally move me, I recognize that it is close to completion. From there, I work to deepen the visual and emotional complexity, inviting viewers to explore subtle interactions and form their own personal connections.

My paintings are characterized by vibrant contrasts, where bright hues meet muted shades and different textures blend seamlessly. The dynamic play of color is enhanced through layering and the blending of materials, creating surfaces that change and reveal new nuances depending on the angle and light. Lines and shapes arise naturally from the color fields, guiding the eye and adding structure without limiting the intuitive flow.

Ultimately, my art is an ongoing exploration of color’s vitality—a celebration of how it can express the complexity and beauty of life’s unfolding narrative. Through each piece, I offer a space for viewers to engage with the physicality and emotion embedded in color, discovering their own moments of resonance within the work.
